For trainees and junior employees, starting a new job can be a daunting experience, especially for graduates who are just entering the workforce. A comprehensive junior training program can help ensure that new staff is well-equipped to perform their duties and contribute to the success of the organization.
Paraplanning is a critical function in the financial planning industry. It's important for outsourced paraplanning and admin organizations to ensure that their junior paraplanners have the necessary skills and knowledge to meet the relatively high standards advisers require.

" In my previous experience as an HR Manager for some large firms, the biggest issues we faced with new trainees and graduate staff is that they were often thrown into deep end without having all the necessary training and support to feel comfortable and relaxed in the workplace . " - Megha Rana, HR Manager at Felcorp
For us, it’s important to give our trainees the right education, company expectations, company policies, and mentoring assistance. We want our new staff to experience the different pressures of working in a commercial environment but have the resources and confidence to be able to seek help from our senior staff members when they are unsure what to do. We are seeing with our junior staff that after 6 months, they are far more resilient and proactive when it comes to problem-solving. This, in turn, leads to better service for our clients.
We have implemented a comprehensive training program that ensures our new and existing staff are well-equipped to meet the changing expectations of our clients in line with the changing industry requirements.
From on-the-job training to e-learning, we are providing our staff with the resources they need to succeed. Our focus on continuous improvement ensures that our staff is always up to date with the latest industry changes and best practice activities.
We have a variety of training methods we provide to our staff.
- Classroom training: As managers, we provide our team with formal instructions in a classroom setting. This includes training on specific skills, industry-specific knowledge, and company policies and procedures. Australia has strict regulations in place for financial planning, and it's important for paraplanners to have a thorough understanding of these regulations. A comprehensive training program can ensure that new paraplanners are aware of their obligations and are equipped to adhere to industry regulations.
- On-the-job training: This is a practical training method that involves providing our team members with hands-on experience and guidance on software as they perform their job duties. Simply, the junior member will have a go doing a variety of tasks that will be guided by the team manager or another senior staff member.
- E-learning: This method involves providing employees with online tutorials available on each software that explains all the aspects with case studies and each strategy implementation. We have partnered with Australian CPD providers to deliver a specialized ongoing program designed around our specific paraplanning and admin outsourcing operation. This enhances the learning experience and gives our staff practical information to deploy when they are problem-solving.
- Simulation/ case-study-based training: This method involves providing the new team with simulated job scenarios that allow them to practice and apply what they have learned. We will take specific complex scenarios that we have received from our clients and adapt them to a simulation training exercise.
- Ongoing support: We provide ongoing support to our staff, through regular check-ins, performance evaluations, and opportunities for professional development. We also pair new paraplanners with experienced mentors so they get guidance and support on each step as they navigate through complex scenarios. We seek feedback from clients on staff performance and use it to identify areas for improvement.
- Cross- Cultural training: We provide cross-culture training to our staff to ensure that they can work effectively with clients in Australia to understand the little cultural nuances. This helps to build greater understanding but crucially reduces misunderstandings.
At Felcorp, we are committed to employee development so they can feel that they are also part of the company’s growth and success.
